About Forward

Crowd at Monday's vigil against hate.A political movement was launched during the 2016 General Election. It’s a movement that crosses political party boundaries and ideologies. It’s a movement being lead by women, men and students, who never accept “it cannot be done” or “that is just how things have to be.”

Across the Walla Walla Valley, we have seen this movement on a grassroots level grow in size and diversity. It’s a movement that is less interested in “taking back” our community to some former glory, than it is in moving our community forward to achieve it’s best. It’s a movement that is vested in recognizing the inherent worth and dignity of every person that lives in our community. It’s a movement that demands respectful and inclusive civil discourse.

Forward is a digital news channel focused on documenting that movement. Our content covers local, state and federal government politics and local political events. Through our civic engagement project, Forward Impact, we are working to increase civic engagement, transparency and accountability in local government, and raising awareness to disparity that impacts our neighbors.

Forward is a grassroots project made up of a team of volunteers that donate their time and talents to bringing you our coverage. Forward is part of the Rise Media network.

Our Values

Journalism is best when pursued with purpose. It is easy to take stances against small problems but we want to tackle the Walla Walla Valley’s big problems. When we do that, reporters and editors should be clear about what they’re trying to achieve.

Forward’s staff adopted this list of shared values to help illuminate what we’re pursuing and give reporters the mandate to pursue them aggressively and irreverently.

We pressure leaders to solve widely accepted problems and local challenges. To evaluate what those are, we offer this template of our values and concerns.

We seek:

  • Government transparency, open meetings, and accountability.
  • A well-informed, well-educated community ready to participate in civic affairs.
  • Government agencies that are just, efficient and open.
  • Access to quality, affordable healthcare options; including mental health and substance abuse services.
  • World class infrastructure that supports free enterprise and job creation.
  • High-quality education for all children.
  • A robust and inclusive art, food and cultural scene.
  • A clean environment and healthy ecosystem.
  • Preparations for the long-term challenges of drought and climate change.

We are obligated to pursue a mission, not deliver returns to investors, who might earn more if writers chased celebrity controversies or salacious criminal mysteries. Our mission and our values help us keep our focus on the issues and challenges that will define the Walla Walla Valley for decades.
